FAQ’S
What should I wear for my first class?
For your first few classes you are advised to wear loose tracksuit bottoms and a t-shirt or aloose fitting top. Footwear is not important as it’s not required.
When will I need to buy a Karate suit?
A Karate Gi (suit) can be worn from the first day, but some students prefer to wait 2-3weeks before purchasing a suit. You are unable to Grade without a Gi.
Where can I purchase a Karate Gi (suit) and how much will it cost?
We have Gi’s available in stock and are much better value for money than sports shops.
Do I require any other equipment?
Other equipment include a variety of body protection. Hand mitts are a must forsparring/kumite practice. Shin & Foot guards, groin protectors, chest protectors and a gumshield. You may not need them all.
How often do you have Gradings?
We have 3 Gradings per year, usually in March, July and November, only students who are fully prepared physically and mentally will be put forward to grade.
Does it matter that I can only train once a week?
Any training is better than no training, however the more often you train the better youget. Students training once a week cannot expect to retain the knowledge and grade as regularly as students training 2 – 3 times per week.
How old does my child need to be to start Karate?
We have specific classes and the facilities to accept students from as young as 3yrs old.
Am I too old to start Karate?
Certainly not! We have students in the Club of all ages, Karate offers many challenges which appeal to mature students as well as to the younger ones.
Can I train with my children?
Most definitely yes, in fact it is encouraged. The classes are structured in Grade not inage, therefore all the beginners train together whether adult or child. Please see our Timetable page for details.
Do I need a licence?
Yes, you do need a licence which is purchased through our Club at a price of £30 per year. You are not required to purchase a licence straight away but as soon as you are sure that youwant to continue with Karate, you should buy a licence. You will not be able to Grade unless you have a valid licence. Your licence is not only for Gradings, it also gives you insurance coverin case you injure yourself or somebody else while at Karate. It is also used to keep a record of your Gradings and Karate achievements.
